HTC One successor could top US carriers in early 2014

Recent reports suggest that HTC could bring its next flagship smartphone, code named "M8," to the big four US providers by the first quarter of next year.

The successor to the HTC One could arrive at all four of the big wireless service providers in early 2014, according to recent chatter.

A pair of tweets from the well-connected @evleaks Twitter feed suggests that HTC will release its next flagship across AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon within the next few months. It's not clear if this means that all four will carry the device on the same launch day, but it would be a big win for HTC no matter what the timing.

Operating under the code name M8, HTC's next big phone is rumored with a 5-inch or 5.2-inch display and 3GB RAM. Like other top Androids of the day, this handset could have a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. Photos unearthed within the last week show a form factor not unlike the HTC One's, save for one key exception: a cutout on the rear side above the camera that could be a fingerprint scanner.

The HTC One was initially expected to hit three of the top providers in March 2013, but supply issues delayed the release by a number of weeks. Verizon Wireless, for its part, didn't offer the HTC One until six months later , in August.

Should HTC somehow persuade all four carriers to support the rumored handset, at the same time it will definitely need to ensure supplies meet potential demand. Speaking of which, I worry that HTC is one misstep away from going down for the count.
