Android fans assemble! The HTC Desire HD is taking a pasting at the hands of the Apple iMac in our Greatest Gadget of the 21st Century tournament.

The competition is currently in its second week of voting, and we've already seen gadgets such as the Nokia N8, the Asus Eee PC and the Sony PSP unceremoniously dumped out of the running. Now it looks as though the Desire HD could be headed the same way at the hands of Apple's aluminium all-in-one, with the iMac currently commanding 59 per cent of the votes.

The HTC Desire HD is the poster boy for Android -- Google's popular mobile operating system that rivals the iPhone's iOS platform. We think the Desire HD is the best Android phone yet, with its glorious 4.3-inch display, 8-megapixel camera and superb Android 2.2 plus HTC Sense software running under the hood.

The legendary Rupert Goodwins of ZDNet UK has offered the Desire HD his support, and explains why the lethal combination of power and openness offered by the Desire HD makes it an awe-inspiring piece of tech.

We know Android commands a loyal and devoted fanbase, so there's still time for a robot uprising before this round's voting concludes at the end of the week.

That said, the iMac is certainly a mighty opponent. As our very own Rich Trenholm pointed out, it was the first desktop to make computers sexy, worming its way into trendy offices and futuristic Hollywood missile-command centres. It's a rock star, there's no doubt about it, and as things stand it'll be cruising into the quarter finals come Monday morning.

Pick a side people, and have your say -- which gadget deserves to wear the crown?
