HP error message stymies installation of driver updates: a follow-up

Regarding the error when trying to install the new HP DeskJet/DeskWriter 9.4.2/9.4.3 drivers (as mentioned last time), two readers offer new work-arounds. They are allvariations on the same theme:
Will Deatrick writes: "To avoid the problem, I found it necessary to perform a clean install of the original 9.4.0 driver but not select a printer from the Chooser after the restart. The 9.4.0 installer forces a restart before one can apply the update. Upon restart after installing the 9.4.0 driver, a dialog box asks the user to select the printer in the Chooser. If I did select a printer, the "11002:2,-15" error would appear when I applied the update. If I did not select a printer, the updater worked successfully."

Leslie Vandiver offers another explanation and solution: "I got this message when trying to update a driver that had been modified by the Keyspan software to work with their USB adapter. Reinstalling the unmodified 9.4.1 drivers using the HP patch and then using the Keyspan USB patch on the 9.4.3 driver worked flawlessly. I use an HP 660C."

However, some users find that none of the work-arounds seem to work. For example, David Stempnakowski writes: "Tried updating a 870Cse on both a PowerBook G3 (Wall Street) and an 8600/300 and got the same error. It occurred regardless of whether or not AppleTalk was active, regardless of a clean install of the drivers, and regardless of whether extensions were on or off."
