HP 3.2 printer driver: Palomar Software replies on reader reports

CNET staff
Joel West (of Palomar Software, developers of the driver software) writes: "We have investigated the< various complaints by MacFixIt readers regarding the HP DeskJet 970C software, version 3.2 (see last week's item). Here's what we found: The low ink problem is a bug that we were not aware of before 3.2 shipped and will be fixed in the next release. The need for a "save settings" is something we are painfully aware of, and expect to address in a future release. We were unable to reproduce the reported duplexer problem. The 3.2 driver fully supports the duplexer in all 900 series printers and was extensively tested prior to release. The only possible explanation I have is that the duplexer is not enabled in the Chooser dialog - this is optional for USB printers but required for EtherTalk printers. We also were unable to reproduce the reported draft mode problems. The 10 point black text was quite readable in six different Apple fonts. Yes, dithered images in draft were lower quality than best, but the results were consistent with other 300 dpi inkjet printers (and the same as in 3.02 and 2.0A)."
