After upgrading to iOS 5 on my iPhone 4, I noticed that my Twitter app was not behaving up to snuff. My troubleshooting investigation led to some interesting realizations about how Twitter is integrated in iOS 5.

Twitter's role in Apple's latest mobile operating system is a bit different from other apps. The issue I was having was that the Mentions tab in my Twitter app was not updating. I knew from reading my account feed that some of my Twitter followers were sending me tweets, but I was not getting notified and they were not appearing in my Mentions list.

With most apps in iOS 5, users can reset the app by following these steps:

  1. Return to the home screen.
  2. Double-click the home button to bring up the multitasking bar.
  3. Tap and hold the app you wish to reset until it jiggles.
  4. Tap the red minus icon in the upper-left corner of the app to delete it.

This was my first step, but it failed to solve the issue. I followed this by resetting the iPhone itself (press and hold the home button and the sleep/wake button until you see the Apple logo). No luck.

Then I thought I would log out of my Twitter account and log back in. Surprisingly, you can no longer do this from the Twitter app itself. Instead go to Settings > Twitter and tap on your account. Scroll down a bit and tap Delete Account. Once your account has been deleted, go to Settings > Twitter and tap Add Account and enter your username and password.

Once your account has been added, open the Twitter app. Your tabs should all be updated properly and your notifications (if they have been enabled) should be back to normal.
