Reworked trailer puts haters of the 'Ghostbusters' reboot in their place
Before you see the reboot hard-core fans think will be horrible, watch this not-so-gentle reminder from Honest Trailers that "Ghostbusters 2" already was a bad sequel to the original.
As "Ghostbusters" fans anxiously wait to see whether director Paul Feig's reboot will be funny or a letdown, Honest Trailers is making sure fans understand "Ghostbusters 2" was already a sequel unworthy of the original film.
In a new video posted Tuesday from Honest Trailers -- a YouTube series from Screen Junkies that features a classic movie-trailer voiceover but with a narrator who hilariously makes fun of films -- there's plenty of evidence "Ghostbusters 2" may have been much more worthy of scorn than the reboot is receiving.
"If you loved the first 'Ghostbusters' movie, then you should definitely go watch that one instead," the video says. "But if you insist on seeing part two, prepare for the exact same plot, with tiny cosmetic changes."
Honest Trailers points out that just like the original "Ghostbusters" movie, "Ghostbusters 2" starts out with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson as washed-up scientists who no one believes, then continues with a ghostbusting montage, while Murray romances Sigourney Weaver's character Dana, who is harassed by a household appliance.
But that's not all. The team is harassed yet again by an insufferable government official, who gets them arrested until the mayor asks for their help when an eerie hole opens up in the sky and a giant mascot attacks New York City -- in "Ghostbusters 2" the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man is replaced with the Statue of Liberty. The team shoot their weapons into a portal and save the day yet again.
"It's exactly the same as the first movie, but bad!" according to Honest Trailers.
The parody video also mocks the main villain of "Ghostbusters 2," Vigo the Carpathian -- "an evil painting who really should have stuck to writing metal lyrics."
But what really makes this video special is how eloquently it puts reboot haters in their place. "So before you go and see the movie that people have decided will ruin the franchise before they've even seen it, revisit the movie that already ruined the franchise by throwing out the fun grown-up comedy and doubling down on lame kid stuff."
Previously, Honest Trailers has skewered such movies as "Deadpool," "The Revenant," "Labyrinth," "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," and "Superman," to name a few.
"Ghostbusters" opens in theaters on July 11 in the UK, July 14 in Australia, July 15 in the US and August 11 in Japan.
