hfspax archive utility released

CNET staff
hfspax, a lightly hacked freeware version of the Mac OS X utility pax, is now available. The main functional difference in hfspax and Mac OS X's pax is that hfspax saves and restores any resource forks and all Finder information for files when working in cpio mode. The hfspax alpha 1 release can be found at this site. Howard Oakley, the program's developer, writes:

"hfspax is based on open source code and is therefore completely free of charge. Once the code is a bit neater, and initial bugs have been fixed, we expect to make it open source too. Under development is a Cocoa-based friendly front-end, to be called BackXwing, which will be $10 shareware (via Kagi). We will announce when the first release of BackXwing ships.

For those unconvinced of the OS X backup problem, hfspax is accompanied by a document which examines the< various possibilities and their shortcomings, and explains why we decided to use pax as its basis, rather than GNUtar or another tool."
