Wherever there is fire, we shall seek to tame it. This is especially true in the kitchen, where fire equals deliciousness. But as time has gone on we have traded flame for electricity, in the names of both safety and convenience. But just because our kitchens are populated with safe stovetops and convenient microwave ovens doesn't mean we have to give up the quest for flavor. Or even fire.

One common kitchen item is a culinary torch. The little butane-powered gadgets are used for tasks such as finishing sous vide food, or caramelizing sugar for creme brulee. But the little lighters often don't have the fire power necessary for larger applications. Therefore, many up the ante and turn to blowtorches to get the job done. Like the kind used for welding.

Gear in the kitchen and gear in the garage don't often go together, but when they do, the results can be delicious. However, the drawback is getting the parts to fit. Enter the Searzall.

The device is made to attach to a common blowtorch, in effect, turning it into a handheld broiler. Consisting of a couple of fine mesh screens (and a wire cage exterior for safety), the device takes the intense, focused flame of the blowtorch and spreads it out. The result is distributed heat that offers better coverage without sacrificing the high heat that creates a delicious sear.

Conceived as a complement to sous vide cooking, the crust-making fire tamer is a high-powered kitchen accessory that seeks to blaze a new trail -- and it looks to be doing just that: the Searzall Kickstarter campaign is off to a roaring start, having almost achieved full funding in just a few days.
