In celebration of System Administration Day on Friday, organizers are sponsoring a contest to recognize the outstanding achievements of perhaps under-appreciated system administrators.

As the official System Administrator Appreciation Day Web site says, "Let's face it, System Administrators get no respect 364 days a year."

To remedy this sorry situation, sponsors have organized a contest, allowing people until October to nominate system administrators for their unsung heroics.

Grand prize is a trip to Washington D.C. to the annual Large Installation System Administration Conference (LISA) and a $2,500 license to Splunk Professional, a service for helping system administrators share information. First Prize is an Apple MacBook.

Says Splunk CEO Michael Baum: "We're calling on everyone to take out a moment to pat their sysadmin on the back for a job well done."
