Hard drive "32GB limit" issue: a follow-up

Regarding a possible 32GB limit issue, linked to Western Digital and/or Maxtor drives (perhaps with a Sonnet Tempo ATA card), as covered last time: This Western Digital web page has a link to a PDF document that confirms a 32GB BIOS limitation when this 45GB drive is used with a Windows PC. Instructions for modifying the jumpers are given as an "interim solution." Getting a BIOS upgrade is the desired solution. Perhaps, something similar is going on with some Mac configurations. Supporting this theory, Joseph Gudac writes: "I have been using a Maxtor 40GB drive for almost a year, formatted to only 32GB. After removing the jumper R46 (as suggested in your article) and reformatting the drive using Drive Setup, I was able to reformat to 38GB." On the other hand, numerous readers claimed to be using 40GB or greater Maxtor drives, even with a Sonnet Tempo ATA66 card, without any problem. For example, Phil Rose wrote: "I recently installed a Sonnet Tempo ATA66 IDE controller card along with a Maxtor 40GB (7200 rpm) drive. There was no problem with either mounting or recognized capacity. The drive (used with default jumpers) was initialized with Apple's Drive Setup 1.7.2, and the four partitions total 39GB."
