Hack Attack: how to make a DIY honeycomb flash grid

Make your own honeycomb flash grid for under $10 with this simple hack. All you need are straws, black plastic and a sense of humour.

Welcome to Hack Attack, where we take a light-hearted look at building your own photographic tools on the cheap.

Photography is an expensive hobby. With new toys being released all the time to make you lust after pricey photo gear, Hack Attack provides the wallet-friendly version of doing it yourself. Over the coming weeks, you'll be able to watch the projects grow in complexity, and possibly see some epic DIY fails along the way.

This week's build is a custom-made honeycomb flash grid or speed grid. For this hack, you will need:

  • External flash unit/speedlight

  • Black plastic sheet (I used polypropylene from a craft store)

  • Ruler

  • Pencil that can write on plastic

  • Velcro strips and dots

  • Black plastic straws and something to cut them with

  • Double-sided tape.
