Guvs support Oprah's 'No Phone Zone Day'

The Governors Highway Safety Association and its member state highway safety agencies are joining forces with Oprah Winfrey and Harpo Studios to fight distracted driving during "No Phone Zone Day" on Friday, April 30, 2010.

Oprah Winfrey, who's famous for giving away cars to audience members, is now promoting driver safety by making cars a "No Phone Zone."

The Governors Highway Safety Association, and its member state highway safety agencies, today announced it is joining forces with Winfrey and Harpo Studios to fight distracted driving during "No Phone Zone Day" on Friday, April 30, 2010.

Since January 2010, Winfrey has been promoting a ban on cell phone use while driving--especially texting.

Currently the states that have banned texting while driving include: California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, New Jersey, New York, Washington and Utah. Seventeen other states have partial bans on cell phone use.

A special live episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" devoted to dangers associated with cell phone use and special viewing rallies will be held in Atlanta, Boston, Detroit, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., bringing together victims' families, elected officials, advocacy organizations, parents, youth, and law enforcement to discuss best practices and steps to limit distracted driving in their own communities.

The "Oprah" show will debut a new sponsored public service announcement campaign. All participants and viewers will be asked to pledge to make their cars a "No Phone Zone." The pledge asks drivers to promise to not use their phone, or text while driving, but to use handsfree calling options or pull over to make a call when necessary.
