The 802.11 working group of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers has approved two study groups to look into standardizing ways of improving features of Wi-Fi wireless networks, according to a representative. One study group will consider mesh networking. The other will look into ways of allowing faster roaming among wireless access points, driven by growing interest in developing voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) capabilities in wireless networks.

The IEEE's 802 executive committee will vote in March on whether to turn the two study groups into task groups, which is where the development of the standards will take place.
