The Google Home hits stores Friday, offering more choices for consumers who want to test out a smart speaker. Our review of the device concluded that the Home isn't nearly as capable as the rival Amazon Echo , which pioneered the smart speaker category two years ago. Still, it's fun to get the Home to beatbox.

Also on today's podcast, we chat about Facebook's strong quarterly earnings and its push into video, as well as bans on taking selfies at the voting booth.

The 3:59 gives you bite-size news and analysis about the top stories of the day, brought to you by the CNET News team in New York and producer Bryan VanGelder.
