Getting a non-working -- wrong resolution -- third-party display to function (resetting to correct resolution)

CNET staff

Several users have run into an issue where a Mac-connected third-party display will not display an image properly because it has an incorrect resolution setting. In other words, the Mac is attempting to send an incompatible resolution setting to the display resulting in a blank screen or other abnormalities.

In most cases, this issue can be resolved by booting in Safe Mode (hold the Shift key while starting up), then opening the "Displays" pane of System Preferences and choosing a different (working) setting -- booting in Safe mode should allow the display to default to a working setting. Check your display's manual for information on supported resolutions.
