Get WinX DVD Copy Pro for free

Want to make backup copies of your DVDs? This utility, which normally costs $50 but is free today only, gets the job done.

A scratched DVD is a worthless DVD. I learned this the hard way after the kids destroyed half our Pixar movie collection. That's why I'm a strong believer in making backups.

Today only, Giveaway of the Day is giving away Digiarty's WinX DVD Copy Pro 3.4.3 for Windows. (I mention the version number because if you have an older freebie, here's your chance to upgrade.)

To get the program, click only the link marked Download WinX DVD Copy Pro 3.4.3 now. There's a lot of promotional clutter on that page, including some big, sexy "Download Now" buttons that aren't for this.

Important note! After installing the software, you must visit Digiarty's giveaway page, then enter your name and e-mail address. That's how you'll obtain the license code you need to activate the full version.

Also, if you've never snagged a GotD freebie before, there are two things you should know. First, you must download the program before midnight tonight (ET). After that, it'll be gone, replaced by a new giveaway.

Second, you must also install and run the program before midnight tonight (again, ET), as the activation process is time-coded. If you wait till tomorrow, you won't be able to get the full license.

To answer your next question, yes, this means that if you reinstall Windows, move to another PC, or whatever, you won't be able to reinstall the program. Hey, don't expect miracles; it's a freebie!

And a really good one, in my humble opinion. WinX DVD Copy Pro offers four main options. It can copy a DVD to a blank DVD, thereby giving you a backup or spare copy. It can also copy a DVD to ISO format or a VIDEO_TS folder, the latter great for stocking your media-center PC with perfect-quality movie rips.

Finally, the program can copy DVDs to MPEG-2 format, another good option for media-center movie libraries. The program has a simple, straightforward interface, and in my experience it works as advertised.

Standard disclaimer: WinX DVD Copy Pro can remove nearly all forms of DVD copy protection, but you should use it only if you own the DVDs in question. Also, no selling or otherwise redistributing the copies. That's a violation of fair-use laws.

If you're the type of person who likes to buy movies and TV shows on DVD, this is a great way to protect your investment. Grab a cheap stack of blank discs and start your burnin'!

Bonus deal: While supplies last, Dell is offering the refurbished Dell Streak 7-inch Android tablet for $179 shipped. Features include a 1GHz dual-core processor, 16GB of storage, dual cameras, and Android 2.2. It's also 4G-enabled via T-Mobile, but that's an optional service; you're not locked into a contract. Read CNET's Dell Streak review to learn more.

Bonus deal No. 2: It's a new low! J&R has the Pogoplug multimedia-sharing device for just $21.99 shipped (when you log into J&R Friends with Benefits, which is free to join). Sadly, it's the retina-burning pink model, but it's still a great way to add hard drives to your network and share your media all over the place.
