Get an Eee PC 1000HA Netbook for $290 shipped
Before you plunk down hundreds more on a heavy, bulky notebook, check out the compact, lightweight Asus 1000HA. It's garnered some of the best reviews of any netbook.
The Asus Eee PC 1000HA is widely regarded as one of the best Netbooks on the planet, if not the best. Most vendors sell it for $350 and up, but ZipZoomFly has the Eee PC 1000HA-BLK026X for $289.99.
That's after a $30 mail-in rebate (PDF) and with coupon code momday509, which you'll need to enter at checkout.
The 1000HA features a 1.6GHz Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, a 10-inch screen, and a 160GB hard drive--fairly standard specs for a modern-day Netbook.
It also sports a six-cell battery, which Asus says will give you seven hours of runtime. (Based on some other Netbooks I've tried, I'd be happy with half that.)
Powered by Windows XP Home, the 1000HA weighs just over 3 pounds and measures about 1.5 inches at its thickest point (and 1.1 inches at its thinnest). I wouldn't call it svelte, but it's still much easier to tote than your average laptop.
CNET hasn't reviewed this model, but the consensus at Amazon (where the 1000HA sells for $385, FYI) is overwhelmingly positive: an average of 4.5 stars out of 5 from more than 370 reviewers.
Thus, if you're in the market for a Netbook, this is a hard deal to pass up. For $60 less than the price of the Acer Aspire One I detailed a while back in my Netbook Diaries story, you get a system with a comfier screen and keyboard and way better battery life. What's not to like?
