When it comes to GPS screens, bigger is better. The common 3.5-inch LCDs are way too small for my liking; I prefer the increasingly popular 4.3-inchers. But even then it's a little too easy to fat-finger the onscreen keys and controls.
I'm starting to see more 5-inch GPS models, but I think those models eat up too much windshield space. Enter the Magellan RoadMate 1470 and its 4.7-inch display, which promises to be juuuust right.

A lot of people balk at buying a refurbished GPS because they're concerned about getting old, outdated maps. However, Magellan offers a 30-day map guarantee that includes refurbished models. As long as you register the unit within 30 days of purchase, you can get updated maps free of charge (though a $10 shipping charge does apply). Not bad, huh?
The RoadMate 1470's claim to fame is definitely its spacious screen, though it does offer handy features like text-to-speech, a OneTouch favorites menu, lane assistance, and AAA extras (like a tourbook and roadside assistance for AAA members). An optional Traffic Link accessory provides real-time traffic updates.
CNET hasn't reviewed this model, but PC Magazine rated it four stars out of five, and called it "easy to use and an excellent value."
Because this is a refurb, the warranty expires after three months. That's the only downside to what is otherwise an unprecedented deal on a large-screen GPS.
