Get a 15.6-inch HP laptop for $274.99

That's your after-rebate price on this dual-core Pavilion running Windows 8, but it's still an amazing deal.

Staples

Have you been eyeing one of those $249 Samsung Chromebooks, thinking it could meet your fairly basic computing needs?

Maybe it could, but for just a few dollars more, you can get a bigger, more powerful, and more versatile PC.

To wit: For a limited time, and while supplies last, Staples has the HP Pavilion G6-2235us 15.6-inch laptop for $274.99 shipped (plus sales tax where applicable). That's after applying coupon code 70847 at checkout and redeeming a $50 mail-in rebate.

The Pavilion sports a 2.7GHz AMD A6-4400M dual-core processor, 4GB of RAM, an impressive 750GB hard drive, and a 15.6-inch LED-backlit screen. It also comes with an optical drive, nice for folks who like to go old-school with their software, movies, and the like.

Other noteworthy specs include three USB ports (two of which are USB 3.0) and, for better or worse, Windows 8. The system lacks Bluetooth -- probably not an issue for most users, and easily remedied with a $2 adapter.

The machine weighs around 5.5 pounds, so it's on the hefty side, though that's about average for a laptop of this size. Also average: the estimated 3 hours, 15 minutes of battery life.

Some 150-plus Staples shoppers rated the Pavilion around four stars out of five on average, with many of the more negative reviews focused on Windows 8, not the hardware.

If you're willing to learn to live with Microsoft's new OS and want a laptop with big storage, a big screen, and a small price, this is definitely worth a look. That post-rebate price is just crazy-good.

Bonus deal: Like comics? Perhaps you read my recent post about the new Marvel Unlimited app. But here's an even better deal: until tomorrow, ComiXology is offering over 700 free first issues of comics like Avengers, Fantastic Four, Hulk, and Spider-Man. Most of these would normally cost between $1.99 and $5.99. You'll need a (free) ComiXology account; the comics can be viewed online or on your phone or tablet. Stock up! (Note: At press time, the site was loading slowly due to heavy traffic.)
