A Song of Ice and Fire author George RR Martin has picked the winners in a series of imaginary showdowns between his own characters and those from Lord of the Rings in an MTV challenge.

It's the game. Could Superman beat the Incredible Hulk? What about Spider-man against Wolverine? The Red Skull and Skeletor?

For those of you who we didn't lose to deep contemplation, it's a game with which author George RR Martin is familiar, having pitted his own character Jaime Lannister against Rand Al'Thor and Cthulhu.

He's a little bit more even-handed in the challenge "GRR vs. JRR" put to him by MTV Geek, although we're forever going to harbour suspicions that he's going to favour Jaime for everything after the Cthulhu fiasco. Seriously, though, Cthulhu would totally win. Hello.

The brackets are (and there may be spoilers, so proceed at your own risk):

  • Aragorn vs. Jaime Lannister

  • Smaug vs. Balerion

  • Saruman vs. Melisandre

  • Wargs vs. Direwolves

  • Ice vs. Glamdring

  • Frodo vs. Tyrion

  • Nazgul vs. White Walkers

  • Cave Troll vs. Mag the Mighty

  • Gimli vs. The Mountain

  • Ned Stark vs. Boromir.

Watch Martin's conclusions in the video below, and let us know what you think!
