Alien-stomping gore-fest Gears of War 3 is mere days from hitting the shelves, but already reviews for developer Epic's third instalment of the popular franchise are pouring in. And wouldn't you know, they're really positive!

Our sister site GameSpot awarded the game a massive 9.5 out of 10, saying it, "hones the series' signature action to a wickedly sharp edge." and is a "masterpiece of exciting gameplay and emotional storytelling that stands head and shoulders above its predecessors."

IGN meanwhile slaps down a 9/10 score, and praises the game's "state-of-the-art design and gameplay where you become the king badass among a gory world of bad-asses", though notes that it's "still the same stuff we've done and seen before."

Writing for the Guardian, Nick Cowen gives the title 5 stars, and writes, "Epic can rest easy knowing their world-conquering series ended on something of a high note. It really is one of this year's essential titles."

Videogamer gives 9/10, saying "Once again, Epic has successfully iterated on a series that most other developers are still desperately trying to imitate." Gears of War 3 has a 92/100 rating on Metacritic.

Our own Gears of War expert Andy Hoyle put down his controller for a moment to tell us that the game is "as action-packed as ever, with a near constant onslaught of nasty beasts to kill."

Andy also praised the graphics and combat, and said that it's, "As much fun holding back, sniping off a Lambent's head as it is ploughing in and tearing someone in half with your lancer's chainsaw." So that's good.

Gears of War 3 is out in the UK on 20 September for the Xbox 360.
