Garmin, Asus nix handset deal

Future is unclear for the currently co-branded devices, which combine a mobile phone with a GPS device.

Garmin and Asus said today they won't introduce any new co-branded Nuvifones going forward, but will support the handsets already in consumers' hands.

It remains to be seen what this means for Nuvifones, which combine a mobile phone with GPS device. Regardless, Asus won't be making them, according to a statement. At the least, the Nuvifone line is being rethought and perhaps being turned into a software service. The two companies inked a deal in February 2009 to create co-branded phones.
