GarageBand 3.0 (#3): iChat conflict -- causes no sound output, problems with preferences

Several users have reported an issue where GarageBand 3.0 fails to output sound when iChat is running -- apparently a result of interference from the sound input function in iChat.

Another issue directly related to iChat -- though likely not to sound input functionality -- is an inability access the Preferences menu item.

MacFixit reader Bill writes:

"I did a fresh install of Tiger, ran a software update to get Mac OS X 10.4.4 and then installed iLife '06. I setup iChat to start on login. Then I fired up GarageBand. Two problems were pretty noticeable.

"First, there was no sound from anything in GarageBand. Sound was fine from all other applications. The second problems was when I went to choose the Preferences menu item, nothing happened. No error message or anything (Console showed a Cocoa array access error).

"iChat seems to be the culprit. If iChat is running prior to launching GarageBand, the above problems are seen. If iChat is not running, GarageBand works just fine. I haven't checked launching iChat after starting GarageBand.

"I believe this issue might be affecting the Mac mini only (maybe because of it not having an audio in?) as the same thing failed to produce the problem on my PowerBook G4. The mini is a first generation.

The issue seems to occur if iChat was launched at all before GarageBand is launched, so the solution is to not launch iChat before GarageBand after starting up your Mac (you'll need to restart if the problem is already occurring). Also, make sure to remove iChat from the Login Items pane of System Preferences, then restart your Mac in order to eliminate the problem.
