Galaxy S4
Is this the phone you want in your pocket? Josh Miller/CNET

There's a newcomer hanging around town. It has 5 spacious inches of screen space. It flaunts a 13-megapixel camera. You can't deny the allure of its 2,600mAh battery. All those specs may put it one up on its competitors, at least on paper. But just because the Samsung Galaxy S4 wants to be top dog, doesn't mean the other guys aren't going to put up a fight.

The lead contenders to challenge the Galaxy S4 for the smartphone throne are the iPhone 5, the HTC One, and the BlackBerry Z10. They all have their claims to fame, whether it's the iPhone's iOS and fanatical following, the HTC One's gorgeous metal design, or the Z10's reputation as a comeback kid. These flagship phones all have their supporters, and their detractors.

We've broken down the specs of all those phones for you. If this were a role-playing game, the S4's character sheet would be looking mighty strong. Still, the other phones have the advantage of logging time on the market. They've been shaken down by consumers and all have tough reputations to top.

Pre-orders for the S4 are heating up and the wide release is on its way before too terribly long. CNET has already given it an Editor's Choice award, now it's time for customers to pass their verdict. Did you rush to get your pre-order in? Is the Galaxy S4 your top smartphone, or are you in a different corner? Vote in our poll and talk it out in the comments.
