Fresh poster flaunts 'Doctor Who' 50th anniversary

Exciting image teases the upcoming "Doctor Who" anniversary spectacular. What do those flames portend?

A Doctor once said, 'Some people live more in 20 years than others do in 80. It's not the time that matters, it's the person.' BBC America

An upcoming 75-minute special called "The Day of the Doctor" celebrates the 50th anniversary of the iconic sci-fi television program "Doctor Who." While the special show isn't anything new, a mint poster that debuted Thursday should re-illuminate your sonic screwdriver.

In case you're unaware, the anniversary spin-off stars outgoing Doctor Matt Smith; his predecessor (and tenth Doctor) David Tennant; and David Bradley, who plays the first Doctor -- a role originally portrayed by the late William Hartnell. Seasoned actor John Hurt, as well as Jenna Coleman and Billie Piper, round out the prominent cast.

Hurt, who appears in the upcoming special as a Doctor from a previous time, should be one of the main highlights of the story. "Doctor Who" producers confused viewers with the last-minute introduction of Hurt as a Doctor during the series seven finale of the television show, so many fans undoubtedly want to know more about how this fellow fits into the canon. A rumor indicates that Hurt may act out a very compelling role, further hinted at in the poster as flames and destruction surround the actor.

The highly anticipated "Doctor Who" anniversary program is just one of many specials celebrating the series -- BBC also has a Tardis-size offering of documentaries, original show rebroadcasts, and other events going on. And don't forget about that new Doctor , who gets his official title in an episode set for December 25.

"The Day of the Doctor," set for simulcast around the world , premieres November 23 on BBC America.
