Framework Technologies' latest version of its Web-based collaborative software allows users to design and publish Web sites for managing projects over the intranet and extranet.

Due to ship by the end of the month, Framework's ActiveProject 5.0 lets users with little HTML or other programming experience build and manage Web sites that act as central points. Using a standard Web browser, users can go to that central site to access documents, computer-assisted design (CAD) software files, schedules, spreadsheets, images, database queries, and other applications.

"It centralizes not just documents but graphics and email as well," said Brian J. Giuffrida, Framework's director of marketing. "It also allows users to bring in information from third party systems too."

The ActiveProject client requires either Netscape Communicator 4.06 or higher, or Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 with service pack 1 or higher, the company said.

ActiveProject also supports large, distributed organizations, by serving as an intranet application that enables employees to share project information or business knowledge. The program can also act as an extranet product, allowing firms to share information with customers or partners.

Knowledge management software lets companies take information from various sources, such as the Web, back-office applications, and databases, and turn it into applications they can use in making business decisions.

ActiveProject RealTime Review is integrated with Microsoft NetMeeting so project teams can share applications over the Web and hold real-time conference sessions.

A new enhancement called the Project News Page allows authorized users to drag and drop news items and images into a publishing template. That template can be added to and edited through a standard Web browser without a Webmaster's assistance, said the company.

For a 15 seat license, ActiveProject is priced at $16,495 and requires a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 with service pack 4 and Microsoft Internet Information Server 4.0 or higher. Additional seats start at $695.
