Few weapons have had as colorful a life as Luke Skywalker's lightsaber. A fan has created a lovely tribute video tracing its travels across the galaxy.

Have you seen "Star Wars: The Force Awakens?" Yes? Read on. No? There are some minor spoilers ahead. And here's the minor spoiler: One of the big mysteries from last year's hit Star Wars film is how Luke Skywalker's iconic lightsaber ended up in the possession of ancient alien Maz Kanata, the owner of a castle/bar on the planet Takodana.

A video called "Path of a Lightsaber" attempts to shine a little bit of light on the question by tracing the lightsaber's journey across all the Star Wars movies.

YouTube user Christopher Sherwood released the painstakingly compiled footage on Monday.

Sherwood isn't tossing out speculation or jumping to conclusions. He's just laying out what is known of the lightsaber's various owners along with some dialogue about the weapon's path.

We hear Maz's voice as she talks to Rey, who now possesses the lightsaber: "That lightsaber was Luke's and his father's before him. And now it calls to you."

The video is a fun way to trace the lightsaber's many steps. It doesn't solve the Maz mystery. That question may well be answered in "Episode VIII," which is currently filming under a veil of secrecy. Sherwood will probably need to make a fresh cut of "Path of a Lightsaber" once the next film comes out in 2017.
