FireWire 800 speed test results Bare Feats has posted a preliminary benchmark analysis for FireWire 800 throughput. Though the only currently shipping Mac models with built-in FireWire 800 are the new 17" PowerBooks, the Bare Feats article uses a soon-to-be-released PCI card from WiebeTech. The results show FireWire 800 besting ATA-133 in some cases. More.

Fighting spam with... Napster? The Wall Street Journal reports that an unlikely candidate- Napster - is helping a new service fight spam. "SpamNet, a new e-mail filtering program using the same technology that allowed Napster users to swap music online, is helping its users banish unsolicited bulk e-mails from their inboxes -- and protect other people from the 'spam' at the same time." Case closed for AOL Steve Case has decided to "get out of the way" at AOL/Time Warner, admitting "a rare defeat in an unpredictable career that carried him from computer start-up to the top of the media establishment." A CNET article quotes sources close to the company who have said the coup was led by shareholders upset by a 70 percent decline in the value of the company since the $106 billion merger was finalized in January 2001, as well as ongoing accounting scandals.
