Firefox 2.0b1 (#3): Patience key for QuickTime video loading; Workaround for lack of separate home page and new window settings

Patience key for QuickTime video loading We previously reported issues with viewing QuickTime-based content in Firefox 2.0b1.

In some cases, the movies are simply slow to load, and will do so after a few seconds.

MacFixIt reader Daniel Leighton writes:

"I thought I was having this problem as well. I was seeing only a white, blank screen when the news clips would open, with no indication of any kind of downloading progress. Coincidentally, however, CNN appears to have moved from RealVideo to QuickTime for showing their news clips at the same time Firefox released their latest version. The QuickTime logo does not appear while the movies are loading and, subsequently, it appears as if nothing is happening. Whether this is a Firefox issue or a poor implementation of QuickTime on CNN's end, I don't know. But I am able to see movies. Better, in fact, that when they used RealAudio, which often failed to connect to the server."

Workaround for lack of separate home page and new window settings We previously noted that Firefox 2.0b1 lacks separate home page and new window settings in Firefox 2.0b1. In other words, if you set your home page to a website, it forces you to open that page with every new window created.  If you want a blank page created in new windows, you must set your home page to blank."

MacFixIt reader Acciuga offers a potential fix:

"What I discovered was that with no windows open in Firefox I can select 'Open Location (command-L)' from the File menu and a blank browser window will open."
