Common post-update fixes

Users are experiencing various minor issues after updating to Firefox 2.0.0.5. Among the early reports:

  • My problem--on three computers--with ALL Firefox updates 2.x is that they all create a left frame into which the website goes while the larger frame on the right stays blank.
  • The latest 2.0.0.5 build of Firefox causes most of the extensions I have installed to be disabled. I guess the 3rd party devs will update their extensions for compatibility soon
  • i have just installed FF 2.0.0.5 on a MacBook (latest OS update and standard spec) and now it won't open. I've uninstalled an reinstalled it but to no avail. it just 'bounces' once and then stops.
  • After updating Firefox printing and creating a PDF preview doesn't work anymore ( on HP officejet).

As with previous releases, the primary cause of issues post-update for Firefox 2.0.0.5 is the presence of problematic add-ons, including themes and extensions. You can quickly check if one or more add-ons are culpable by using starting Firefox in safe mode. To accomplish this, launch the Terminal (located in /Applications/Utilities) and enter the following command:

  • /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox -safe-mode

then press return.

Try to recreate the same problem that was extant before the update. If it is gone, an add-on was likely to blame. Go to the Tools menu and select Add-ons. Disable any themes or extensions that could be causing the problem then try launching Firefox normally and check for persistence of the issue.

Downgrading Firefox If you still experience serious problems after updating to Firefox 2.0.0.5, you can downgrade to an earlier release. Older versions of Firefox, including 2.0.0.4, are available from: http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/. If you are experiencing significant issues after updating and wish to downgrade, simply download the older release then drag Firefox 2.0.0.5 to the Trash. Next, drag the (newly downloaded) older release to the /Applications folder.
