Firefox 1.5 Special Report: Problems downloading .dmg.gz files

CNET staff

Several users have reported a problem where Firefox 1.5 has problems properly recognizing that files with the .dmg.gz extension (disk images that have been compressed using gzip).

For the problematic files, Firefox will simply begin to load the file as text, mistaking the MIME type for the file as text/plain with x-gzip encoding.

Firefox's preferences include a section for modifying download actions (click on the "Downloads" tab in Firefox's Preferences then "View & Edit Actions"). However, there is no way to add an appropriate entry for files with a .dmg.gz extension.

Until a more permanent workaround is found, you can avoid this issue by simply holding the option key while clicking on a problematic .dmg.gz link to invoke a file download.
