In a shocking twist of irony, Apple's Finder application has been reported as unable to find the size of folders. MacFixIt forum user fosterpapillon describes this issue:

"When I do Get Info for a folder which contains other than a few small files, the Info window shows Size as "Calculating size" and never comes up with a value. The problem seems to cut in when the folder contents exceed about 1 MB."
Other people, including myself, have experienced similar issues when asking Finder to calculate folder sizes-- especially multiple folders at the same time.

Possible fixes
As with most software related bugs, try repairing your permissions using Disk Utility first. Be sure all your software is updated and restart your computer.

Possible workarounds
If the fixes do not seem to be working, there are some workarounds available.

MacFixIt forum user Virtual1 suggests:

"I use terminal's DU command to get the info for me when I'm impatient. There are some free apps out there that will calculate space used for you."

MacFixIt forum user MG2005 adds:

"Here is a handy little FREE application for revealing file/folder sizes... WhatSize 4.5.1"

Note: WhatSize 4.5.1 has a free version and a paid version. The free version allows you to measure up to 20GB of data. The purchased license allows unlimited data sizes to be measured.
