Crashes on launch -- try removing audio plug-ins We've received scattered reports of Final Cut Pro 5.1.1 crashing upon launch. In some cases, this issue can be resolved through the removal of audio plug-ins.

Look in the following two locations:

  • Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components
  • Library/Audio/Plug-Ins

and remove any third-party audio plug-ins.

Re-launch Final Cut Pro 5.1.1 and check for persistence of the crash. You can then move the files back, one by one, in order to determine which plug-ins are causing problems.

5.1.1 update only for Universal Binary edition Note that the Final Cut Pro 5.1.1 release will only update the Final Cut Pro 5.1 release, which is offered as a US$49 Universal "crossgrade." It will not update the 5.0.x, PowerPC-only release.

MacFixIt reader Shirley Sanderson writes:

"I have the latest PowerPC version of Final Cut Studio. Updates appeared this morning for several components of the Final Cut Studio suite. I downloaded them. I tried to update Final Cut Pro to version 5.1.1 but the updater flashed a message that it would only update from version 5.1. Version 5.1 was the universal binary release that cost $50 for the upgrade. Since I don't have an intel Mac, I saved my money and didn't upgrade. So I'm just writing to say that for those of your readers who are still working on non-Intel Macs, don't bother with the upgrade, it won't work."

Projects are not backward compatible Projects created in Final Cut Pro 5.1.1 are not backward compatible with version 5.0.x and earlier. In other words, files created in version 5.1.1 cannot be opened with version 5.0.x.

The best solution is to save Final Cut Pro 5.1.1 projects in XML format, so that users of Final Cut Pro 5.0.x can open the sequence, but not the project or the clip information.
