FileZerver conflict with Mac OS X

FileZerver conflict with Mac OS X

CNET staff

Bryan Forrest writes: "We recently purchased an MDL FileZerver system. This relatively inexpensive device provides 360 GB of storage, Raid 5, and will synchronize with another unit we have in different building. Unfortunately, we are unable to copy large directories from OS X to the server without getting a -50 error. Smaller directories will copy about 50% of the time and individual files are successful about 80% of the time. File Copies from OS 9 and Windows work fine, but OS X fails on AFP, SMB and FTP. FileZerver claims it's an incompatibility with their software. However, FileZerver claims a software update will be released by December to fix this problem, but that doesn't help much in the immediate future."

Update: Kee Hinckley writes: "Netatalk provides AppleShare server capabilities, not client capabilities. OS X doesn't use Netatalk--it's a direct port of the native AppleShare capabilities from earlier versions of MacOS."

Update: Bryan adds: "Kee is correct. I was told by the folks at FileZerver that problem is in their implementation of Netatalk, not with OS X. Nevertheless, the conflict is real." [We edited the original report to reflect this clarification.]
