FileMaker Pro 8.0v3 (#3): Fixes for problems with installation

We continue to report on issues wiht installing the recently released FileMaker Pro 8.0v3 update.

Most users report that installation hangs at the 'searching volume...' phase.

MacFixIt reader Bill describes the issue:

"When I run the update application, it stalls at the initial point ? searching volume. I went to the Knowledge base and they suggested disconnecting other drives which I did, but the update application still fails to proceed beyond the point of searching volume."

Fixes

Kill specific FileMaker processes MacFixIt reader Jami K reports that killing specific FileMaker-related processes using Activity Monitor (located in Applications/Utilities) allowed proper installation of the update.

Jami writes:

"We tried to follow FileMaker?s instructions of going into the server admin and then going up to File and then down to Shut Down Server.  That worked but didn't shut down all of the daemons that were running behind the scenes specially if you have web publishing running.

"I had to go into Activity Monitor, filter by ?fm? and then quit the following processes:

  • FM Web Publishing
  • fmserverd
  • fmserver_helperd

"After that, install went great and turned server back on and was at v3. This was running on an Xserve G5 running 10.3.9."

Disconnecting volumes Several readers report that they had to disconnect all external volumes aside from the startup drive before installation would proceed.

Steven Roehl writes:

"I had this problem this morning when I tried to install the FileMaker Server 8.0v3 patch. But on the second try I unplugged all firewire devices and the install went very smoothly.

Paul Nicolai adds:

"Killing all remote volumes off desktop before install solves the spinning ball problem. For whatever reason the updater decides to go searching all remote volumes for update-able applications. Once they were off the desktop, it installed just fine."
