'Ferris Bueller' Super Bowl teaser just a Honda CR-V commercial

The original video, released last week, was an Internet sensation and raised hopes that a new "Ferris Bueller" installment was in the works. Turns out it's for a Honda commercial.

A teaser video showing actor Matthew Broderick seemingly reprising his role as the iconic "Ferris Bueller" became an Internet sensation last week. But it appears now that all the excitement surrounding it might be short-lived.

Honda today confirmed that the teaser video, which was viewed over 4 million times after going viral, was part of a two-and-a-half-minute commercial it plans to air during the Super Bowl on Sunday to promote its 2012 CR-V automobile.

"To celebrate the launch of the all-new 2012 CR-V, Honda brought 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' back in a big game commercial," Honda wrote in a video description on YouTube. "We cast Matthew Broderick as himself, skipping out on a day of acting work and living it up in his all-new CR-V. Relive movie history with Honda's fresh twist and wonderful homage to this '80s classic."

When the teaser video showing Broderick getting ready to take another day off was released last week, the Internet was abuzz with hopes that it would mean a new installment in the franchise would be coming to the silver screen. However, a listing on IMDb showed no mention of a new "Ferris Bueller" title, and Matthew Broderick's filmography didn't list any new projects he might be working on, making some wonder if there was more to the video than met the eye. Those folks now have their answer

Although this might not be the news "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" fans would like to hear, Honda has tried to dull the blow a bit by hiding more than two dozen references to the movie throughout the commercial.
