Fat Folder Fixer addresses folder file limit problem

CNET staff
Today's Ask Al notes that the Finder can complain that there isn't enough memory to open a folder when it contains just a few thousand items in its top level. This is a difficult situation because you can't open the folder to remove some of the items. There's also a problem with having more than 32,767 items in the top level of a folder. Even if you have unlimited amounts of memory, the Mac OS File System cannot access items 32,768 and higher.

A new utility, Fat Folder Fixer, solves the problem by automatically redistributing files to newly created subfolders without having to open the folder.
