Facebook is promoting Colin Stretch, a senior member of its legal team, to the soon-to-be vacated position of general counsel. Stretch will assume his new responsibilities on July 5.

Stretch, who joined Facebook in 2010, is the company's acting deputy general counsel. He will replace current General Counsel Ted Ullyot, who announced in May that he was leaving the social network after five years with the company.

"Colin has been an instrumental leader on the Facebook legal team and has earned the trust and confidence of management, the board of directors and our entire company. We are very excited to have him as our new general counsel," Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg said in a statement issued to the press.

Stretch's Facebook tenure has already introduced the Harvard Law School graduate to the company's high-stakes cases. He negotiated the company's settlement with the Federal Trade Commission in 2011 and led Facebook's appellate win against the Winklevoss brothers .
