Ex-TV exec to lead Yahoo media group

Company brings another entertainment heavyweight into its executive ranks, this time to spearhead its media division.

Yahoo has hired former ABC television executive Lloyd Braun to head its media and entertainment division, the Web portal said Tuesday.

Braun, 46, was fired in April from his post as chairman of ABC Entertainment Television Group, a division of Walt Disney. According to The Los Angeles Times, he was ousted at a time when network had just two shows in television's top 30. Among the other former jobs on his resume are chairman of Disney's Buena Vista Television Productions, president of Brillstein-Grey Entertainment, and partner at the law firm of Silverberg, Katz, Thompson & Braun.

At Yahoo, Braun will head the media and entertainment division, which includes business units focused on movies, TV, entertainment, music, games, finance, news, weather, sports, health and children. He will begin work on Nov. 15 and report to Dan Rosensweig, Yahoo's chief operating officer. Braun joins a number of former entertainment executives at Yahoo--most notably Yahoo Chairman and Chief Executive Terry Semel, who worked previously as co-CEO at media conglomerate Warner Bros.

Braun's hiring underscores Yahoo's growing effort to establish itself as a larger player in the media industry. In recent months, the company has signed several deals to provide related Web content for popular television shows such as NBC's "The Apprentice" and CBS' "Survivor."

The executive has a number of well-known shows attached to his name, including HBO's "The Sopranos," for which he is credited with developing the series' original concept, and ABC's "Desperate Housewives." Braun is also considered one of the driving forces behind ABC's push into reality television.
