The Eudora Pro Email v4.2 Updaters web page now has the following statement (thanks, Jim Carr, Armen Sarkisian and Vincent Cayenne):
Attention Macintosh 4.x users. We have detected a defect in Eudora Pro 4.2 updater release. Previewing messages with attached graphics may cause Eudora to crash. You can avoid this potential problem one of two ways. Go to Special/Settings/Mailbox Display and uncheck "Show message previews by default", or go to Special/Settings/Fonts and Display and uncheck "Display graphics in messages". Again, this only affects Eudora Pro for Macintosh version 4.2 users. We will be releasing a fix shortly.

Lorne Nukina writes of another potential issue: "I can see that there are messages coming in but once Eudora has finished retrieving them, they do not appear in my in box right away. There is a 10-30 second delay. The previous version of Eudora Pro delivered the mail promptly. I do not have filtering turned on." [Note: filtering would otherwise be a likely cause here, as it is now done in the background.]

Update: Daniel Griscom replies: "I, too, found a long delay between receiving and actual 'delivering' of the messages. If you have the task process window open then there's a 'Deliver' button to click, but that's a pain. I finally found a setting for the delivery delay. In the 'Threading' panel of the Settings dialog, there's a 'Wait time until delivering' field which defaulted to 10 (seconds, I assume). I set this to 1, and no more delay."
