Epson printer issues: Smart Scroll conflict?; No printer seen in Chooser

Smart Scroll conflict? Stephen Stitle writes that every time he selected the Epson 750 printer driver from the Chooser, his Mac would crash. He isolated the cause to a conflict with Smart Scroll 3.5. Upon removing Smart Scroll, the problem vanished. He adds: "A friend of mine has been having the same problem for 6 months with his Epson 740. He also has Smart Scroll 3.5. He removed it and his problem was also solved."
Update: A note on the web page for Smart Scroll 3.5 states: "Try re-downloading Smart Scroll if your Mac crashes when displaying a scrollbar in an item list such as the Chooser. There was a bad file posted here in the first hour of the 3.5 release." Redownloading the file should fix the problem. Wei-Mun Wang suggests this might be the cause of the reported problem here.

No printer seen in Chooser Tom Niesen was unable to get his Epson 750 to show up in the Chooser at all. He was using a USB connection to his Power Mac 8600/300 through a Belkin PCI to USB card. He writes: "The printer showed up on the USB bus in the Apple System Profiler but, when selected in the Chooser, there was no USB bus to select. The problem was solved with an interesting twist. It seems that the printer won't show up on the USB bus if there are any warning lights on the printer. My color ink cartridge was out of ink. I had a replacement cartridge but was not going to replace it until I could get the printer operating correctly. It seems that under this condition (red warning light on printer), the printer does not show up correctly in the Chooser. Replacing the cartridge solved the problem. This was verified by Epson support."

Update: Other readers confirm this problem, even with serial port connected Epson inkjet printers (such as the Epson Stylus 800).
