Entourage 2004: More on problems Time Warner and other ISPs

We previously reported that Entourage 2004 has problems when accessing POP3 and NTLM version 1 mail servers -- which are used by Time Warner's RoadRunner internet access service and other ISPs.

One MacFixIt reader reports that in his case, the use of PGP caused problems with Time Warner, and uninstalling a specific component of the software resolved the issue.

The reader writes:

"Using PGP 9.0.5 [Build 5050] in combination with Entourage is the real problem. But the problem is still partially with the ISP's servers and with Entourage but only in this combination - at least for me.  PGP was at the heart of the problem.

"PGP has a feature called "PGP Messaging" when this feature is enabled sending mail can take additional time. Sometimes depending on your network connection the time can be slower or faster. In the first case I was on wireless and a traceroute showed that I had longer times to get to the ISP's SMTP servers. Using a hardware (ethernet) connection proved only slightly faster. In any case the combination of PGP's delays, the length of time to access the ISP's server and Entourage's inability to be patient caused what I would say was a false positive for the Microsoft Knowledge base article

"Once the 'PGP Messaging' services were completely removed and the feature was completely disabled in PGP?s preferences as shown in the picture below I was finally able to send and receive messages to and from Time Warners servers with Entourage. What a relief that was! I did not attempt to contact PGP yet about this issue since I don't really see a need for it in my case. The sad thing is it's on by default. "
