eBay same-day delivery makes a stop in New York City
"eBay Now" has expanded outside its initial location in San Francisco, with the company giving New Yorkers $15 off their first order and free shipping for three deliveries.
Richelle Parham, chief marketing officer of eBay Marketplaces, noted in a post that the eBay Now mobile app now allows shoppers to receive items from hundreds of retailers in New York, typically within an hour. The service will be available in Manhattan as far north as 125th Street and at the western edge of Brooklyn.
And to attract new users, the company plans to take $15 off shoppers' first order and make the first three deliveries free. eBay noted subsequent deliveries will be $5 each while eBay now remains in beta.
eBay launched the eBay Now app last month, with the service initially available only in San Francisco. Shoppers can order items from a variety of retailers -- Best Buy, Finish Line, GNC, Home Depot, Macy's, Office Depot, RadioShack, Target, Toys R Us, and Walgreens -- and get them delivered to their door. They're able to pay using PayPal or credit card upon delivery.
Walmart, saying it's being tested in Northern Virginia, Philadelphia, and Minneapolis. The service, called Walmart To Go, is a trial run for the holidays that lets customers order specific items and gifts, which can then be sent to their homes or offices that same day.
Amazon also is believed to be thinking about offering same-day delivery, particularly as it widens its distribution capabilities, and has beenin select cities and periods for the past two years.
