DVD Player 2.7: installation notes; reader reports

Apple has released Apple DVD Player 2.7 for its DVD-ROM drives. Here is what the Read Me has to say about compatibility:
  • Apple DVD Player is a software-only DVD player. It is not compatible with the DVD hardware in the Power Macintosh G3, PowerBook G3, and Power Mac G4 (PCI graphics) series computers.
  • Apple DVD Player is not compatible with the After Dark sleep function. Do not use the After Dark sleep function while a DVD movie is playing.
  • DTS encoded discs are not supported.

The Read Me (Apple TIL #120022) also contains suggestions for improving playback quality. After a trouble-free installation on our Pismo, we noticed a slight improvement immediately. Previously we rarely encountered a disc we could not play, but we did see a sound skip and an image delay when shifting tracks or opening and closing the controller. With Player 2.7, the image only paused for a brief moment, and the sound was continuous.

Several users have also reported their experiences:

Trey Sullins writes: "When attempting to update the Apple DVD to version 2.7 on our Pismo PowerBook, the installer balks without the DVD Player expansion module inserted. I twice attempted to install with batteries in both expansion ports and received a 'cannot install the software on this machine' error. Removing the battery and inserting the DVD module remedied the problem." We have encountered this behavior ourselves with the last several DVD Player updates. Often it is not enough to install the drive, the machine needs to be restarted also.

Manuel Alvarez adds: "Nowhere does the Read Me state that the DVD Player hardware must be installed to perform the upgrade." It does state the a previous version of DVD Player software must be installed. (Thanks also to Jared Norris.)

Brian Parr writes: "I have had an incessant little popping sound during DVD playback on my G4 Ti PowerBook. And after updating to QuickTime 5, I was no longer able to play DVDs in full screen mode. I updated to the new Apple DVD 2.7 released today and both problems disappeared!"
