Duplicate listings in Connect to Server: Readers confirm

We have numerous confirmations to yesterday's report of duplicate server listings in the "Connect to Server" window. Some even claim to have seen this prior to the X 10.0.3 update. The consensus is that it relates to using DHCP. Here are some highlights:

Blake Seely writes: "I have had the duplicate AFP listing at least since 10.0.2. Since all the machines on my network get DHCP addresses from my AirPort Base Station, I figured that somehow the 'Connect to Server' listing had some sort of memory, because every time my machine takes a new address it hasn't had before, I get yet another entry in this list."

Reader Carlos adds: "Essentially what is happening is that an entry for the local machine is being created for each successful DHCP session in the server list. So if you DHCP 6 times since the update was installed you will have six entries. If you DHCP 4 times you will have 4 entries. This bug happens regardless of the unique nature of the IP address served by DHCP. So if you get the same address all six times all entries will look the same. If you have a PB and boot off of several DHCP servers on different subnets you will get entries corresponding to those addresses.

Steve Dockery writes: "I'm having the same problem. My iBook shows up a whopping ten times, each with a different IP address. The 3rd address listed matches the one shown in my TCP/IP control panel. In addition, my iBook isn't visible in the Chooser to other (OS 9) machines on the network. But I can connect to it if I click on "Server IP address." But only if I use the IP address that actually appears in my TCP/IP panel. The other 9 addresses don't work."

Jeff Blume confirms our own finding: "I saw this immediately after the 10.0.3 update. Particularly odd is that the duplicated server is the machine I am actually running OS X on (my other machine is running OS 9.1)." By the way, in our case, the Connect to Server window now never finishes its search; the beachball spins endlessly. This too has been confirmed by others.
