DSW Shoe theft touches 1.4 million credit cards

Investigation finds that data from 1.4 million credit card and 96,000 check transactions was stolen from shoe retailer's computers.

An internal probe of theft at DSW Shoe Warehouse stores found that information involving 1.4 million credit card and 96,000 check transactions was stolen from their computers, according to parent company Retail Ventures.

Retail Ventures, which first announced the theft in March, said Monday that information was stolen from 108 stores, or five more than initially thought, in detailing the results of its fraud investigation.

The company said in a statement that it contacted federal authorities, hired a computer security company and notified Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express of the theft.
