Double shut down bug: a follow-up

Double shut down bug: a follow-up

CNET staff
Regarding the double shut down problem in Mac OS 8.1 described here previously, many readers have offered suggestions:

Several readers claimed that the problem only happened when they tried to shut down with a PPP connection still active (and PPP tried to disconnect during the shut down sequence). A few other readers claimed that the shut down bug was linked to using FileSaver (which also typically kicks into gear just prior to shut down). A few others pointed the finger at any program that uses Apple's invisible Temporary Items folder (which should get flushed at shut down). It seems as if almost anything that is active at shut down may trigger this bug. It makes me think that there is a more fundamental underlying cause - possibly in the OS itself. Even so, it remains a bit mysterious why the problem does not then affect all Mac OS 8.1 users. (The Macs Only web site has more thoughts on this matter.)

Finally, although I am skeptical of this as a general solution, George Papanicolaou claims that the program MenuTasker (a utility that "patches two OS Traps at startup, and enables processing to continue while you are searching through those endless menus, or dragging windows fixes double shut down") fixed the problem for him.
