Domain names case-sensitive: when it happens

Regarding yesterday's item on case-sensitivity of domain names in OS X browsers, Eric Kopf follows-up with an explanation as to why the symptom appears and then goes away (our own tests confirm his explanation):

"It appears that with Internet Explorer at least, if the domain has been cached, then IE pulls the page from the cache regardless of case. So once you've made a successful connection to a site, then the problem doesn't exist for that site. If the page has never been accessed, then it will fail. You can test it yourself by clearing out the cache and then trying www.HP.com. Note: bookmarked pages do not exhibit the problem. So any of the default sites, like www.apple.com, and any sites that you may have added to your bookmark list will probably work fine regardless of upper or lower case letters in the domain name. iCab fails regardless of whether a domain is bookmarked/cached or not. Also, if someone uses a browser in Classic mode, they will not see the problem."
