A MacFixIt reader reports issues with running DiskWarrior 3.0.x on drives connected via FireWire 800 or SATA 150 or faster.

The reader writes:

"We were breaking down one of our test G5s (Gestalt ID/PowerMac 7,3) in prep for installing and testing OS 10.4.5. We go through some pretty extensive preps to do this, from testing individual CPU components, regulating power and monitoring harmonics, etc., to applying the software in steps prescribed by both Apple's engineers and from our own work experience and research. We've been pretty good at this, now, for 18 years, if I do say so.

"When running a plain vanilla core config of 10.4.5, with only the Java updaters applied (1.3.1, 1.4.2 rel 2, and J2SE v5.0, rel 3; no root-owned/OEM apps updated) we then installed DiskWarrior as our first and only 3rd-party, non-root owned executable.

"When booting from a FireWire 800 external or from a SATA 150 or faster DiskWarrior 3.0.3 quits unexpectedly right before it presents you with the option of saving the report.

"When run from a Firewire 400 drive (on any G5) or an ATA/5 or ATA/6 (we tested this on a QS, mirrored-door), same exact core config of 10.4.5 cloned (by all NetRestore and ASR standards) from drive to drive, DiskWarrior 3.0.3 does NOT quit and runs normally as expected. We've repeated this now over 15 times on various Macs and it is 100% repeatable."

UPDATE: It now appears that this issue may be represent a recurrence of an issue we previously covered where, for some users, DiskWarrior repeatedly crashes after installation of QuickTime 7.0.4.

As we noted in our previous coverage, one fix is to revert to QuickTime 7.0.1, or perform the following process:

  1. Quit DiskWarrior 3.0.3
  2. Control click on DiskWarrior 3.0.3 and from the contextual menu select "Show Package Contents"
  3. Locate the "Complete.aiff" sound file - the path is: - DiskWarrior 3.0.3.app -> Contents -> Resources -> Complete.aiff
  4. Rename the "Complete.aiff" sound file "Alert Complete.aiff" - then close ALL windows"
