Disabling the Netscape Communicator 4.7 Shop button: a follow-up

CNET staff
Regarding the new Shop button in Netscape Communicator 4.7 and problems with Netscape's advise on how to disable the button (see Troubleshooting Netscape Communicator 4.7):
Visa Kopu also had trouble with the Netscape fix for getting rid of the Shop button - until he opened the Netscape Preferences file (using BBEdit) and noticed that it had the same stuff that the liprefs.js file had (he too did not have a file called prefs.js). He adds: "It may be enough that you put the required command in Netscape Preferences file only, but to be sure I put it to both of the files (liprefs.js and Netscape Preferences). I launched Netscape and the Shop button was gone!"

Ken Marks similarly confirms: "The fix shown in the Release Notes works if you also edit the Netscape Preferences file."

James Whitson figured out another way to disable the Shop button. It requires modifying the Communicator application:

  1. Open Communicator 4.7 in ResEdit (make a back-up copy as always)
  2. Open the TEXT resource
  3. Open ID #3015 "macprefs"
  4. Add the line: user_pref("browser.chrome.disableMyShopping", true);
  5. Close all windows and save
